Late in the evening, just before midnite on Saturday, November 4, 2000, my beloved Herbert Iano
Narcis completed suicide by hanging on the strongest and tallest tree he found behind our home in
Astumbo, Dededo on our island of Guam. Contrary to all the stigma about the fault being on the
mate, suicide is a mental illness.
He left behind our beautiful children - Heather (14 years old then) and Herbert Anthony (11 yrs old
then) - and myself to wonder why he just could not swallow his pride and seek mental health. We
loved him very much, almost as much as he loved us. And it was the threat that he was to be taken
far away from his family that finally made his mental illness unbearable. I can remember hearing
his words that nite... "I would rather die than be taken away from my family and forced to
forget who they are!"... then he walked out crying and repeating how sorry he is... I thought
he would be back, but he never came back...
He also left his father, who died two years later and 15 brothers and sisters. One of his brothers
pre-deceased him and one of his brothers died a year after him.
Herbert enjoyed being a free spirit and I believe he is continually soaring our skies and still
being that free spirit that I know him to be. We were Soul Mates and I will soon reuinite with him
when my natural time comes. I miss him every day and even tho it is now almost eight years later,
his smile, voice and smell is still on my mind. I always feel his comforting pressence whenever I
am down, and it reassures his promise to forever watch over me and the children. I miss my Soul
Mate, but his love is continually keeping me strong. Until we meet again my love!
